This qualification provides a trade outcome in Carpentry and apprentices work under the supervision of a licensed builder. Carpenters are involved in the building and construction industry, and may work on domestic building sites (building, renovating or repairing new homes), commercial sites (building or fitting out commercial shops or offices) or industrial sites (major construction projects or public works, which involve a range of contractors).


The training includes the essential occupational health and safety requirements, using tools and equipment, wall framing, ceiling frames, roof trusses, pitched roofs and constructing eaves.

A qualification in carpentry will give apprentices the backing to work effectively in a range of carpentry areas. These areas include but are not limited to:

• Carpenter and Joiner

Course Units

Qualification Requirements

30 units of competency are required for award of this qualification:

  • 22 compulsory units
  • 8 elective units

*Completion of the general induction training program specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction Training for Construction Work (ASCC 2007) is required before entering a construction work site. Achievement of unit CPCCOHS1001A covers this requirement.

Enrolment Condition

Enrolment in this course only for an apprentice with an approved training contract.

Training Prospects requires Photo ID by commencement of course. The following are acceptable sources of evidence: 

  • Current driver’s licence or learner’s permit
  • Current proof of age card (issued by Services SA)
  • Current Australian Passport in conjunction with evidence of residential address
  • Current School Student Card
  • Australian full birth certificate

Course Fees

This course is funded through the Government of South Australia's WorkReady initiative.
